We headed down to Old Sac yesterday for “Gold Rush Days“. The closest thing I found to gold was the margaritas at La Terazzo. After watching the gun fights in the street (fake of course) and seeing all those “bad guys” bite the dust we were ready for a tall cool one. La Terazzo’s is a Mexican restaurant upstairs overlooking the corner between J and K street. I have to say the service was pretty slow there and no one seemed in much of a hurry so if you are looking for speed better go for the hot dog stand down the block. But since we weren’t in a hurry and it was nice and cool inside the margaritas were just the ticket. I don’t know about everything on the menu, but the Carnitas Nachos get my vote, They had lots of stuff on top and plenty of cheese. I guess the bonus was the fact that they were a little slow gave us time for an extra margarita and lots of good conversation.
There was one thing unique at La Terrazo they had a chandalier made of beer bottles and that’s just not something you see every day! Here’s a picture in case you’re looking for something unique for your dining room.
Staycation has been a hot topic at the “Scoop” all week. I was really surprised to see that the Sacramento Bee says today that’s a “hot” word in summer travel but maybe it was overhyped. Personally I think they are just jealous they didn’t think of it first. According to the Bee, “22 percent expect to stay at least one night in a local hotel, motel or resort during their time off from work”. According to my calculation, considering there are almost a million people in the whole Sacramento metro area, that means over 700,000 of us are staying home. So I’m going to make the most of my time off work and enjoy my “staycation”.
Speaking of having a good time…..I found some more “Free Stuff” to do!
The Greek Festival starts today and from 11:00AM to 3:00PM admission is Free. After that it’s only $5 general, $4 for seniors (65+) and kids under 12 get in for free, and it lasts through Sunday. I doubt you will find any fried Twinkies like they have at the State Fair, but it used to be called the Greek Food Festival and they have been doing this every year for 45 years so I think they have this festival thing figured out. A three day party, those Greeks really know how to Celebrate!
This happening event is at the Sacramento Convention Center at 1400 J Street.
This weekend is Labor Day weekend and “Old Sac” is turning back the clock to the 1850’s. More than 800 tons of dirt will be dumped on the streets of Old Sacramento to give you that nitty-gritty feel of the old west. There will be people in costume, wild west gun fights, panning for gold and oooh so much more!
More good news……..”FREE STUFF“……..there’s no charge for admission!
Labor Day is Monday, September 1st, and that might be a great time to check out the fun on the River. It’s not just a coincidence they call Sacramento “River City”!
Some people think you have to leave the state or at least go out of town to have a fun vacation. Even though the price of gas has gone down a few cents, I still think whoever thought up that new word “staycation” has a great idea. If you spend a little time exploring Sacramento I think you can find lots of entertaining things to do.

There’s still time to load the kids in the car and head over to Cal Expo for the California State Fair. It started August 15 but the gates won’t close for the final time in 2008 until September 1st (Labor Day). Cost for a ticket is only $10 unless you’re a senior (ages 62+) then it’s just $8. Hey that’s a great idea, get Grandma and Grandad to take the kids while you hit the golf course. It only costs $6 for ages 5 to 12 and kids under 4 are free.
Can’t beat a deal like that…..not many places you can find free stuff and have fun at the same time. There’s lots of specials too, if you come to the Fair on Monday or Thursday you can park for free if you come before 4:00PM. The State Fair has free concerts going on too with a wide variety of acts. The series started August 15th with Smash Mouth and has had some oldies as well as newcomers. Jessica Simpson was there Monday, she’s gone country you know. Even though it’s too late for Jess there’s stil lots of others to come. To get your free ticket just show up at the Golden 1 Stage at 4:00PM to recieve a concert wrist band.
Hey kids, if you read 3 books and fill out a read and ride form at Guest Services you can get 3 free carnival ride tickets!
And best of all, don’t forget the food! It wouldn’t be a real State Fair without a corn dog and some cotton candy. Why not go all out and have a Fried Twinkie??? What could be better lots of free stuff and junk food too! So have a great “Staycation” and I’ll see you at the fair!!
Surviving the trauma of moving to California is nothing compared to the pain of trying to understand Sacramento street names. I have traveled to cities in several states, and maybe it was for lack of attention or because of the fact that sometimes I was a tourist and not a resident, but for the life of me I don’t remember seeing so many streets that have a name that changes to a totally different name when you just drive from one block to another.
Stop the street sign madness!
When I came to Sacramento for the first time (several years ago) I went forth from the airport with no map and without the aid of what I later learned was an essential of life, my trusty GPS (which is a story for another day). My mission was to scope out Sacramento for the possibility of moving to this great city. Once I settled comfortably into my hotel my first priority, as any self respecting woman should have, was to find the nearest shopping mall. When driving down Garden Highway toward Arden Fair Mall the street suddenly became Arden Way. So that’s what that sign meant that said Arden/Garden. I thought it was a local landmark, maybe a beautiful water garden, but much to my surprise it was just the place where the two streets merged. This was only the first of many such encounters with wayward street names in Sacramento.
Since Sacramento is the Capitol of California, I took another excursion to visit the Capitol Building. On my way there driving down M Street it suddenly became Capitol Avenue. At least that is a little bit logical since M Street leads to the State Capitol Building, but then even that’s not the end of the name game. The section between Front and 10th streets if Capitol Mall.
Hello and welcome to Sacramento Scoop a new place about all things Sacramento!
We’ve all heard the phrase “in the middle of nowhere”. I’ve even heard some people use this phrase to describe Sacramento. Since I am a proud resident of the city of Sacramento, I prefer to think of it as “in the middle of everything”.
First of all this great city of Sacramento is the Capitol of California. That means that Sacramento is the center of California’s state government and all things political. If you don’t believe me just ask the “Governator“. There’s lots of things to see and do here in “River City” as well as San Francisco to the east Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Mountains to the west. I could go on and on but I think you get the picture. Here we are in Sacramento, right in the middle of everything!
