Golfer’s Heaven…..Haggin Oaks Pro Shop
This weekend was filled with festivals in Sacramento. But to top them all, at our house it was my husband’s birthday on Saturday. So not only was there celebrating complete with homemade choclate cake (his request), but birthdays always mean shopping. Shopping for a birthday present for someone who is an incurable “golf addict” only leads in one direction……the pro shop of course. One of the best pro shops in Sacramento is the one at Haggin Oaks Golf Club. I haven’t checked out all the others but at the Haggin Oaks Pro Shop they say they are one of the largest and best in the United States, quite a claim to fame. They are the winners of the coveted “Golf World Top Public Golf Shop Award” and they even have several paques proudly mounted on the wall to prove it. I guess that must be sort of the “Who’s Who” in golf pro shops. Maybe it’s like the Oscars or the Emmys of Golf Pro Shops. I didn’t ask, but I wonder if they had a ceremony and they got to wear a tux and say all their “thank yous” when they got their awards. I owe this award to all the wives (better known as “golf widows”) who stretched that household budget buying hamburger instead of steak so their husbands could buy every gadget created in the free world to lower their much bragged about and never exaggerated golf scores. Thank you to the kid next door who mows the lawn for cheap so the golfers of the world have time to play more golf and buy more gadgets to make us the most coveted and award winning golf shop ever……I can see it now, the red carpet, the name in lights. Or maybe instead of a ceremony it’s more like getting a degree online with no fanfare and they just got those plaques in the mail. Or it could have been just fill your name in the little boxes, enclose your $29.95 plus shipping and handling, and you will receive your pro shop award and special decoder ring in the mail in just six to eight weeks. It doesn’t matter how they got them they must be the best because they have awards to prove they are the best pro shop ever.
First you choose from the hundreds of drivers, irons, hybrids…..the long lean shafts, the well rounded curves of the club heads, the soft but firm grips….it’s almost a sensual thing for golfers. Then they give you a bucket of balls and let you try any of the clubs they have in stock at their 100 stall lighted driving range before you buy. Hard to beat a deal like that, “try it before you buy it”! Can you imagine they need 100 stalls in their driving range which is also lighted and open 24 hours in the summer months. They also have this thing they call the “Players Performance Studio” with cameras and everything. What they do here is have one of their 15 pros watch the golfer swing (with instant replays no less) and analyze how his club of choice is working and how much better he will play with his new wonderful and magical golf gagdet.
Needless to say, our birthday shopping trip was quite a success. If you have a “golf addict” in your family they definitely don’t have a cure at Haggin Oaks Pro Shop, but you can soothe the symptoms. I found quite a few other amenities to soothe the “savage golfer” here too, both a nine hole and an eighteen hole course, a restaurant and more, but I’ll save those for another day……..I have to put the hamburgers on the grill; we would have had steaks, but we spent all our extra cash at the pro shop.

Nice article. By far the best Pro Shop I have been in. I like the fact that you can go in and try out any club you might want to purchase. They let you use the driving range and free golf balls to hit. What a deal. This is how I found my driver.
