October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Published by sara under Events, Outdoor Fun

Everybody knows someone who has had breast cancer, a mother, a grandmother, a sister, a friend, a neighbor, a person at work, or even a celebrity like Melissa Etheridge or Christina Applegate.  Breast cancer doesn’t discriminate by age, race or how much money you have.  Since we are all aware, let’s give our support to a good cause.

The American Cancer Society is sponsoring the 12th annual walk to support the fight against breast cancer here in Sacramento.  The theme is “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer“.  The 5K walk is scheduled for Sunday, October 19th, and will begin with registration at 7:00AM and the walk has a rolling start from 8 to 9AM from the west steps of the State Capitol.  (Just click on the link for information about how to participate.)

If you want more facts about breast cancer or information about screening and detection, a good place to find it is the Susan G. Komen Foundation.  In 1982 Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever.  Since then the foundation was formed and they have raised over a billion dollars toward that effort, as well as education and early detection.

Happy October!

Published by sara under Sacramento Facts

I know fall officially started September 22, but when the calendar says October it seems there’s no turning back, summer is really over.  The weather forecast calls for possible rain by the weekend.  In Sacramento that’s really the final blow, “Goodbye summer!”.  Yes sir, those weather people are going to have to get back to work, they can’t just say “Hot and sunny this week, no rain expected”.  Here in Sacramento you can count on sunny weather from May through September, so I guess into every life a little rain must fall and ours starts in October.

When I was contemplating the meaning of this rain in October phenomenon, I looked in the dictionary and I was surprised to find that the word October really came from the Greek word “Octo” which means eight.  How crazy is that, it’s the tenth month in the calendar and it really means eight.  It’s a long story, but something about the Romans only had ten months in the calendar and then we added January and February at the beginning of the year to make the twelve month calendar and eight became ten.  After that it’s too complicated to think about so just accept it.  Because if we change things now and put those two months at the end of the year where they belong we wouldn’t have rain until December and then Christmas would be in February…….What a mess!

So “Happy October!” and enjoy the rain!
