That E-Waste collection day I told you about was yesterday and who knew Sacramento had so many old electronics to get rid of. According to kcra.com about 650,000 pounds of e-waste was collected yesterday at Cal Expo. Good job Sacramento for recycling your old electronics responsibly and keeping them out of our environment.

Super Bowl parties are happening everywhere this Sunday for Super Bowl XLIII. A couple of days ago I gave you some Super Bowl facts in the post Super Bowl XLIII. The truth is football is great, the halftime show is very entertaining and we’re all in suspense to see the creative commercials but the important thing is the food, and, oh yes the “beverages”. Since this is considered “a man thing” the food is mostly geared toward carnivorous males; the closest thing to a vegetable you will find on the top ten list is guacamole. I found a list of the top ten Super Bowl snacks on buzzle.com that I think is pretty good. Click on the link to see the list. Of course chicken wings are the number one Super bowl snack food, but if you have anything to add or delete from the list let me know and we will have our own list. We may have to do a little research to get it ready for next year, but I really think we can have the all time best, maybe even the MVP of Super Bowl Food Lists.

With all the talk about businesses closing and people losing their jobs it’s great to hear about new business here in River City. There’s a new pub in town; de Vere’s Irish Pub, 1521 L Street, Sacramento, CA 95818.
The de Vere family immigrated to the U. S. 28 years ago and have made our fair city of Sacramento their home since 1984. They went back to Ireland and worked with family to create a “real” Irish Pub and bring it to us here in Sacramento. So come downtown to the Firestone Building at the corner of 16th and L Street to check out the authentic Irish atmosphere and tip a pint while you have a bowl of Irish Stew. Click on this link to check out the decor and have a look at the menu at de Vere’s Irish Pub.

To commemorate and celebrate the contributions to our nation made by people of African descent, American historian Carter G. Woodson established Black History Week. The first celebration occurred on Feb. 12, 1926. For many years, the second week of February was set aside for this celebration to coincide with the birthdays of abolitionist/editor Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. In 1976, as part of the nation’s bicentennial, the week was expanded into Black History Month. Each year, U. S. presidents proclaim February as National African-American History Month.
There are lots of events happening but here’s one that seems kind of special. On February 13, 2009, McClatchy High School, 3066 Freeport Blvd, Sacramento, CA, is having a Black History Bee and the last student standing will win a basket of prizes. Click on this link for more info. What a great way to learn, a fun contest and prizes too!
If you are looking for events you can click on this link to see some other Sacramento Black History Month events.

Earlier this month Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger ordered furloughs for state workers to help the budget crunch. Two state employee unions took the governor to court to challenge his authority to force workers to take unpaid time off. Today Judge Patrick Marlette sided with the governor and said “The current circumstances constitute an emergency.” His ruling allows the Schwarzenegger’s plan to go ahead. The furloughs will be for two days a month beginning next week.

Mayor Kevin Johnson said today that he is putting his effort to make Sacramento a strong-mayor city on hold in order to focus on the city’s budget deficit. Johnson said that he didn’t want the strong-mayor proposal to become a distraction to the number one priority of getting the city budget back on track.

Even if you’re not a football fan the Super Bowl is the one game all year that everybody watches, even if it is just for the commercials or the half time show. So with that in mind, everybody needs a few facts before the important event. The big game with the Arizona Cardinals (NFC) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (AFC) starts at 3:00PM Pacific Time on Sunday, February 1, 2009. If you are one of the chosen few who actually attends the game (72,500 to be exact) you should already have your ticket to the game and your bags packed for the trip to the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. The reality is that most of us will find our front row seats in our living rooms or at someone’s Super Bowl Party watching NBC. If you are watching the game on TV you will have lots of company, the game will be distributed internationally by the NFL and NFL International to more than 220 countries and broadcast in 30 different languages. Each of the winning players will receive $78,000 per man and the losers will receive $40,000 each. Sounds like even the losers are winners in this game.
Now for those of you that are more interested in the half-time show than the game, I can say you have good reason because the entertainer for those magical twelve minutes this year is “The Boss“, Bruce Springsteen himself. Probably the NFL was looking for someone that could hold the crowd’s interest without a wardrobe malfunction after that incident with Janet Jackson in 2004.
Then for the rest of the crowd who is just going to watch for the commercials there’s a real treat for us in Sacramento because one of the commercials is being produced by Bongo Studio right here in Sacramento. The spot is for a commercial to promote the NFL so look for it and be proud of our home town talent.
