It’s Illegal to Text and Drive

Published by sara under Good Things to Know

Hard to believe we need a law to tell us that we shouldn’t text and drive, but our legislators decided that as of January 1, 2009, that is exactly what we need.  When I was driving to Los Angeles over the Christmas holiday there were those light up signs that said text and drive is illegal as of January 1.  It almost made me feel like I should hurry and text all my friends while it was still legal, but I resisted and just called everybody using my perfectly legal wireless bluetooth phone.

Writing, sending, or reading a “text-based communication” while driving is against the law for all drivers in California. Violating this law is punishable by a base fine of $20 for a first offense and $50 for each subsequent offense. With the addition of penalty assessments, fines can be more than triple the base fine amount.
