Amgen Tour of California 2009 Comes to Sacramento

Published by sara under Events, Free Stuff, Outdoor Fun

The 2009 Amgen Tour of California prologue will put Sacramento in the spotlight of the cycling world on Saturday, February 14, 2009, when Lance Armstrong will start his first road race in America since he returned from retirement.  Armstrong won seven Tours de France, but the fast and flat 2.4 mile course may be better suited to Fabian Cancellare, who won last year’s prologue.  This fast paced course only takes about five minutes to complete; starting at 1:30PM at the Capitol Mall at 9th Street some 150 cyclists will start at one minute intervals competing for the best time of the day   The finish is at L Street and 11th Street and since the start and finish are so close together you will be able to watch the riders take off as well as (with a little effort) see them cross the finish line.  The cyclist with the fastest prologue time will receive a jersey signifying that he is the Amgen leader entering the first road stage Feb. 15 from Davis to Santa Rosa.

If this all sounds exciting and you want to experience the thrill of the course for yourself bring your bike and show up about 11:00AM near the starting line at Capitol Mall and 9th Street.  In an event sponsored by Sutter Health, anyone with a bike can join the community ride on the 2.4-mile course beginning at 11:30 a.m.  There is no registration and no cost to participate, just some good outdoor fun.

Mayor Kevin Johnson, who will lead the Sutter Health ride said, “We won’t break any speed records, but we’ll get a feel for what the world’s best cyclists will experience a couple of hours later”.

So grab your bike or just load up the kids and come down to join the fun on Saturday, February 14, 2009.
