Published by sara under Good Things to Know, Hotels

The Delta King, our floating hotel, at 1000 Front Street in Old Sacramento has so much history it is more than just a place to stay for the night; it offers you a chance to experience a bygone era.  You can get a glimpse of the past but with all the contemporary amenities like dining at The Pilothouse restaurant and outstanding river views or a view of Old Sac from your room as well as free wifi.  If you’re just looking for an evening on the town you can turn dinner into a who-done-it at the Suspects Mystery Dinner Theatre or maybe you would like to check out the package prices and stay over after dinner.  If you want more than just a night on the town they also have space for banquets and meetings.  They even have accommodations for weddings for up to 180 guests.

The Delta King along with its sister ship the Delta Queen began their daily river voyages between San Francisco and Sacramento in June of 1927.  Each evening at 6:00PM they left their docks for the 10 hour trip that included jazz bands, gambling, fine dining and even drinking during the prohibition era.  For $3.50 you could have your own stateroom, but if that was out of your budget, for a dollar and bring your own blanket you could spend the night on the cargo deck.  This mode of travel ruled the region until the late 1930’s when better roads and bridges made automobile travel more accepted.  World War II brought an end to this grand mode of travel when the King and Queen were drafted into the U. S. Navy to serve on San Francisco Bay as floating barracks, troop transports and hospital ships.  At the end of the War, the Delta Queen was purchased and taken to the Mississippi River where she still serves.  After being shuttled between Canada and California and besieged with litigations and being sunk for 18 months in San Francisco Bay, the Delta King was towed to Old Sacramento, where it underwent a complete renovation.   After five long years and a complete renovation the Delta King reopened to reign once again as monarch of the Sacramento River.

If you want to experience this little slice of Sacramento history for yourself head on down to the river in Old Sac and check out the Delta King.
