Follow Up on the Oprah KFC Giveaway
I just wanted to write a follow up to the post about the KFC giveaway that was announced on the Oprah show a couple of days ago. It always sounds great when someone, in this case Oprah, tells us we can have something for free. I think just like the rest of you guys, free is good! Even Oprah, who has a gazillion dollars and could eat caviar and champagne every meal if she wanted to, said she had KFC, and why, because it’s free. Even if we have money in our pocket, the thrill of getting something for free always makes it sweeter. Everybody loves a bargain and what better bargain than free.
I went to oprah.com and printed my coupon for “free chicken” today and drove to the KFC on Del Paso Road just off I-5. All sounds good so far, right? I pulled into the drive thru lane and then I saw it. There was a sign posted that said we are not honoring the Oprah Free Dinner Coupon in the drive thru. (Would have been nice if they put the sign up so that you would know that before you got blocked into the drive thru.) No big deal, I thought, that’s a reasonable request and a small inconvenience for a “free chicken dinner” so I drove thru and around to the parking lot. I got out of my car and walked to the door and there it was again, a sign on the door that said they had reached their limit and were not honoring the Oprah Free Dinner Coupon today, try again another day. Now, I know it’s just a chicken dinner and it’s no big deal, but the truth is I feel a little let down. Probably just the “Oprah Factor”, Oprah said it and I believed it, but it didn’t happen. Oprah said it was “free” and nobody said just for a chosen few.
I guess KFC didn’t plan for the “Oprah Factor” when they agreed to this whole free chicken dinner thing. I hope other people had a better experience collecting their ”free chicken dinner”, not because we really need something for free, but if we can’t believe what Oprah says, who can we believe? The next thing you know we will have to wonder about Santa and the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny. Where have all our dreams gone? Do you mean there really is no “free lunch”? …………..Hope springs eternal, maybe I’ll try again tomorrow.
