Crest Theatre Celebrates 60th Birthday

Published by sara at 11:08 am under Events, Movies, Must See Places, Sacramento People

Last night (October 6, 2009) marked the exact day that Sacramento’s Crest Theatre 1013 K Street, Sacramento, CA 95814, opened its doors for the first time sixty years ago.  I feel honored that I was there to witness the event and see the Crest in all her glory.  The movie was the same one that flickered across the screen for the first time back in October 1949, “That Midnight Kiss”.  To help take us back to that time long ago the Crest set the stage by setting the price for admission at just 60 cents and treats at the concession stand rolled back the prices too; we had popcorn, a drink and candy all for only $3.  Makes you long for the good old days, doesn’t it?

At the Crest birthday party everyone had a good time but some really got into the spirit of the special day and dressed for the occasion like Morgan and Anne Staines; he wore a tux and of course she wore pearls.  It was quite an occasion there were ladies with hats and white gloves and gentlemen wearing fedoras.

The Crest has been through a lot in these past sixty years.  It started in a blaze of glory with the upper crust of Sacramento society rubbing elbows but has also entertained the masses that have crossed through the doors to experience the magic of movies as well as live theatre.  It has been through a fire as well as the toll of daily wear and tear.  The marquee was dark for four months while it was being repainted and the neon was restored to its original vibrant colors before the re-lighting ceremony in September.  But after all its ups and downs the Crest has weathered the storm and is still living up to the words over the entrance to the inside of the theatre, “When You Pass Through This Portal You Leave All Cares Behind”.

Thank you for telling everyone about the Crest’s 60th party. It was such a fun event. I just wish more had known about it and attended. It should have been a packed house — especially with tix @ 60 cents! But the evening was very lovely and memorable. The Crest is a jewel of Sacramento. We need to do more there as a community. I cannot wait for the 70th!

Very Cool! And I hear the couple photographed (Morgan and Anne Staines) were there to celebrate his –not 60th– birthday! The Crest Theatre has provided many years of enjoyment for young and old! Happy Birthday Crest!!

Anne and I are not quite as old as The Crest, but our clothes may be. My tux came from actor/director Mel Ferrer, who was most active in Hollywood in the 40s and 50s. I’ve had it for years and have enjoyed many fine evenings in those classic tails. The provenance of Anne’s dress is unknown but the style and handmade construction definitely say vintage, at least.

Best wishes to The Crest and her family! It’s a treasure. Being in the main theater is just about as important as whatever is playing.
