Flu is a Serious Contagious Disease

No matter how you try to disguise it, FLU is a serious contagious disease, not to mention the whole new threat we face with H1N1.

“Sacramento County Public Health has requested a local emergency declaration for H1N1 flu. The local declaration provides flexibility in response to the pandemic and follows in the footsteps of similar state and federal declarations.”  What does this mean in plain English?  It means that Sacramento County wants the flexibility to do what is necessary to protect the health of Sacramento citizens.

Each year, seasonal flu kills some 36,000 Americans. But there is a new and very different flu virus spreading worldwide that was first confirmed in the United States in April, 2009 and affects younger people more severely than seasonal flu does. H1N1 Flu, sometimes called “Swine Flu,” is a new strain that has been declared a worldwide pandemic by the World Health Organization. It caused a “second flu season” in the Sacramento region during the summer of 2009, resulting in illness, hospitalizations and even deaths. Most people recover quickly from H1N1 Flu, but health officials are concerned about its potential to cause severe illness in some people.

Sacramento County Public Health Division is trying to keep all of Sacramento’s citizens informed and prepared so they are providing weekly updates about the status of the disease in our County.  Click on this link for the latest H1N1 FLU update published today, November 2, 2009.

You can check with your doctor or health care organization about available vaccinations, or go to one of the free clinics provided by Sacramento County.

The H1N1 vaccine will be provided free of charge to anyone medically eligible aged 6 months and older at a Sacramento County H1N1 flu clinic. Because H1N1 vaccine supplies are currently limited, vaccinations at our clinics from November 16 through November 24 will be restricted to priority groups. These groups include:

Pregnant women
Healthcare workers
Persons caring for children under 6 months of age
Children and young adults aged 6 months to 24 years
Adults aged 24-64 with underlying medical conditions
