Sacramento Tops in Bike Commuting

The Sacramento Bicycle Advocates (SABA) reported this month that the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey found that Sacramento now has more bike commuters than any other California city, and is 4th nationally behind Portland, Minneapolis and Seattle.  With 2.72% of Sacramento’s commuter trips now by bike, the rate has doubled from just 10 years ago.

According to SABA, “it’s more than just topography and climate that have boosted cycling in Sacramento.  The Sacramento City Council, city staff in the transportation and planning departments and SABA have made a difference.”  SABA went on to cite the City’s putting roads on street diets, reducing vehicle speeds, changing one-way streets to two-way streets, adding bike lanes and bike racks, etc.  SABA particularly noted Midtown as “the epicenter for city cycling.”  Sacramento has also been recognized with bronze level certification by the League of American Bicyclists and is now shooting for gold, and to become the nation’s top city for cycling.

So get on the band wagon, drag that bike out of the garage and hit the road.  Save some money when you ride past the gas station on the way to work and spend it on a new wardrobe when you lose those pounds you found during the holidays.
