Super Bowl Sunday … Just About the Food?
I just read a statistic that said out of every five people that watch the Super Bowl only three of them are football fans. So what are those other two people doing at the Super Bowl Party? They came for the food of course. And if the truth were actually known all five of them probably expect to consume their fair share of goodies. About 7.5 million parties are held on Super Bowl Sunday with 43.9 million party attendees.
According to an article in Reader’s Digest, Super Bowl Parties are second only to Thanksgiving in food consumption. Our turkey friends get a break on Super Bowl Sunday, but chickens take over the job because wings are on the top of the party food list. I don’t know if there’s a record, but there’s a place in Houston that says they expect to sell 300 wings every 20 minutes on Super Bowl Sunday. In case you want to make your own wings click on this link for some easy recipes for wings.
If you are worried all those Super Bowl partiers won’t get their veggies while they are having all those wings, don’t give it another thought; Snopes.com estimates that about 8 million pounds of avocados are sold in preparation for Super Bowl Sunday. Guacamole is another food high on the list of Super Bowl foods. Click on this link if you need a recipe for guacamole.
There are 14,500 pounds of chips consumed with all that guacamole and salsa and numerous other party food. It’s no wonder that there’s a 20 percent increase in antacid sales Monday after the Super Bowl.
The big game is broadcast across the globe in 232 countries and territories and in 34 languages. The game is 60 minutes and the commercial time is 30 minutes so even though the food is a big deal, all those people watching translates to major dollars for the commercial spots. A 30 second spot can cost 2.6 million dollars, so maybe the food isn’t the big deal after all. Just do the math!
