A year ago, Dodge won over many truck enthusiasts by making some very positive steps forward with a redesign of the Ram 1500 pickup.
One year later, it was the Dodge Ram 2500 getting the redesign amid considerable kudos. The full overhaul means the Ram 2500 just climbed to the top of the heap in the minds of some in the heavy-duty truck category.
What’s so enticing about the redesign? Plenty. Start with the exterior, which features a larger, more forward-leaning grille and a prominent hood, making the face of the Dodge Ram 2500 both strong and a bit menacing. Make no mistake, this is a muscle-bound truck, even by big pickup standards.
The redesign will also please folks who seek a little more sophistication in the roomier cab. The interior is similar to what Chrysler designers did for the Ram 1500. The new interior has many soft-touch materials, has improved storage areas (a ton of bins, pockets, dual glovebloxes), and heated, ventilated seating that adds to the comfort, plus additional storage under the floor mats in the second row.
The interior controls were all within reach and fairly user-friendly. However, there was one exception. The audio system when it’s paired with the optional navigation can be annoying to operate.
The new redesign features may give the Dodge Ram 2500 an edge over two of its biggest rivals – the Ford F-250 and Chevy Silverado 2500.
The Dodge Ram SLT Crew Cab was the test model here for a week and goes for around $38,480. Its one powerful truck, featuring a 6.7-liter, turbocharged diesel inline-6 with 350 horsepower. In freeway situations, the Ram 2500 can definitely display its passing power and this truck has a more sophisticated ride than previous models and most rivals.
Another facet of the Ram 2500 is it comes equipped with four-wheel drive (rear-wheel drive is an option as well) and is naturally built for hauling some heavy loads. The towing capacity is a staggering 13,450 pounds.
This particular model is diesel powered, which means it also is paired with something new – an exhaust brake. Usually found only in big rigs, the exhaust brake adds a great level of comfort when needing strong braking power with a heavy load.
Another strong characteristic of the Ram 2500 is the handling. While not exactly nimble, this is a truck that has a good feel for the road and rides with more stability thanks in part to a rear leaf spring.
