It’s Arbor Week in California

Published by sara under Free Stuff, Go Green, Good Deals

Most states have Arbor Day (a day set aside for planting trees), but since California has the California Redwood as its state tree and is home to the world’s tallest and world’s largest tree, we need a whole week for this celebration of trees which is March 7-14, 2009.  Since Sacramento is also known as “the city of trees” this especially important to us.  The city of Sacramento even has an Urban Forestry page on their website, click on the link for all sorts of tree planting info.

The best deal in town for adding shade to cool down that summer heat is from SMUD who has partnered with Sacramento Tree Foundation to give free shade trees to Sacramento residents.  I told you about free trees from SMUD last year and it’s still happening.  Check out the SMUD website for all the info to get your free tree.

Free Trees From SMUD

SMUD together with the Sacramento Tree Foundation has planted more than 400,000 trees in the Sacramento area since 1990.  Pretty impressive numbers……that’s a lot of shade.  SMUD says that shade trees can cut your summer energy bill by as much as 40 percent so that translates to a lot of dollars.

All you have to do to get your free shade tree is call Sacramento Tree Foundation at (916) 924-TREE, or if you just want more info about SMUD’s Sacramento Shade program call (888) 742-SMUD.

Some people might think I sound like a “tree hugger”, but maybe that’s not such a bad thing.  Wasn’t it Will Rogers who said ” never met a tree I didn’t like” or was that “a man I didn’t like”?   And there’s always that poem teachers all seem to like, “I think that I shall never see……a poem as lovely as a tree”.  I never really got that, poems are not that fun anyway, and have you ever seen one that can hold up a tire swing?  So “go green” and plant a tree……for free!
