Veterans Day is November 11th

Published by sara under Events, Good Things to Know

Veterans Day for some is just another day that government offices, the post office, the library and the banks will be closed.  But the real reason for the day is to celebrate all Veterans who have served their country.  Veterans Day began back in 1919 when President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed a holiday called Armistice Day to honor the signing of the Armistice by the Germans on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 which officially ended the conflict of World War I.  By the way, that is why we always celebrate it on November 11th no matter which day of the week, unless it falls on Sunday and then we carry the day over to Monday.  The holiday evolved to not only celebrate the end of World War I, but all Veterans.  So tomorrow put aside being annoyed that you can do government business, or get your mail, or see your bank teller face to face, just use the ATM and send your mail one day later.  So even if you don’t have a big parade or celebrate in the streets, stop for a moment and be a little proud of all those veterans when you see the stars and stripes waving in the air.
